Baptist Scholar Walter Shurden to deliver lectures Oct. 10-11 in Oklahoma City |

Noted Baptist historian Dr. Walter Shurden will deliver three lectures as part of the Baptist Distinctives Series in Oklahoma City on Oct. 10 and 11. Sponsors include the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City (FBCOKC), Spring Creek Baptist Church and the Cooperating Baptist Fellowship of Oklahoma.
“The Baptist Distinctives Series is an opportunity to explore what it means to be Baptist and how those understandings have shaped our churches, as well as our understanding of God,” said Dr. Tom Ogburn, senior pastor at FBCOKC. “We are pleased to offer Oklahoma Baptists this exciting series again in 2009.”
Walter Shurden is the founding Executive Director of the Center for Baptist Studies at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. He served at Mercer University for almost 25 years, teaching as a Professor of Christianity. He has received multiple awards and recognitions for his work in Baptist History from organizations such as Carson-Newman College, Mercer University, the Baptist Joint Committee, the Associated Baptist Press, and Baptists Today. Shurden has served as the President of the Southern Baptist Historical Society and as Chair of the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.
Shurden’s lecture topics will include:
• Baptist Pavement and Potholes, Saturday, Oct. 10, 6:30 p.m.
• When the Walls Come Falling Down: The Priesthood of All Believers, Sunday, Oct. 11, 9:30 a.m.
• Whose Church Is This?, Sunday, Oct. 11, 10:30 a.m. (during worship service)
